Health care reform must ensure that quality coverage is affordable and accessible for every American, regardless of income or pre-existing conditions. But it must not force Americans into a government-run health care system that would eliminate coverage they receive from their employer. Every American should have the right to choose the health plan that best meets their needs, and medical decisions must be made by patients and doctors, not government bureaucrats.

As a father of five, I know that every parent's worst nightmare is their children receiving a life-threatening cancer diagnosis. Tragically, this nightmare turns into a reality for over 15,000 families each year. Growing up, my childhood best friend was part of this statistic; he sadly lost his life to the fight. It wasn't fair then and isn't fair now when a child's life is cut short. With today's advancements in science, this statistic should not be as high as it is and cancer should not be the number one cause of death for our children.
Receiving a cancer diagnosis is scary and life changing. Even more devastating are the tragic instances of cancer in our nation's children. Over 15,000 children are diagnosed with some form of cancer each year. Pediatric cancer is the number one disease killer of children. Together, working across the aisle to put children first, we set out with an aim to help children battling cancer celebrate a long life full of birthdays.

Butterfield (D-NC-01) released the following statements after their bipartisan bill, H.R. 1231 - RACE for Children Act (Research to Accelerate Cures and Equity for Children Act) - passed the House as part of H.R. 2430 - the FDA Reauthorization Act of 2017.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Michael McCaul (TX-10) – Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee and a senior member of the Foreign Affairs Committee – spoke on the House floor in support of the Verify First Act, a bill he helped introduce with Congressman Lou Barletta (PA-11), which would protect taxpayer dollars. Just a few months after meeting Congressman Michael McCaul, I quickly learned that he is a man of deep character with an unwavering conviction to make right and just decisions. I've learned he's a man of his word and a promise keeper. I'm deeply honored to call him my friend.
Last year I had the privilege of meeting a brave young boy from Austin, Rex Ryan. I met this tenacious 4-year-old at Dell Children's Hospital during his clinical trial for the first FDA-approved childhood cancer drug in over two decades, Unituxin. Rex had been fighting neuroblastoma since he was just 18-months-old and, until just recently, all traditional methods of treatment had been exhausted. Now Rex is living a healthy life without cancer.
