Statement from Congressman Michael McCaul (R-TX) in response to Secretary Napolitano's announcement of Operation Stonegarden funding:

July 15, 2010

"I appreciate Secretary Napolitano’s visit to the border and recognizing the need to secure it. However, this administration’s commitment to providing resources for law enforcement agents along the border continues to fall short of what has been requested by our border sheriffs. Funding levels for Operation Stonegarden have stagnated this year and the administration has proposed cuts to the program in FY’11. The $47 million the Southwest Border has received is less than one tenth of the $500 million I proposed last year at the request of border sheriffs who rely on resources obtained through this program to protect against and respond to the ongoing threats of violence in their communities. The current funding does not give sheriffs the long-term commitment needed to retain qualified officers and replace outdated, substandard equipment to adequately protect their communities.”
