On the crisis at our southern border: “I was the chief of counterterrorism and national security in the state of Texas, a U.S. attorney for many years after 9/11, and I saw the threats coming in. But I have never seen it this bad.”

On the Biden administration’s decision to rescind Remain in Mexico: “On day one, President Biden rescinded Remain in Mexico, a policy that I worked with the Trump administration [on] to stop this crisis at our border. And you know what? The Migrant Protection Protocols worked. It was working. And just because it had Trump’s name on it, they rescinded it on day one. Cartels know that, and now they have operational control over the border. How sad is that?

On how he’ll work to secure the border next Congress: “I’m going to do everything in my power. I chaired [the Homeland Security Committee] for three terms; we’re hopeful we’ll have another Texan chairing the Homeland Security Committee. And in my role on the Foreign Affairs Committee, I’m going to go down to Mexico and central America and talk about political asylum agreements, ‘remain in country.’ …

“[Republicans] finally got [the border] fixed, and it’s so sad to see it broken again. But you know what? In a new majority, we’re going to fix it — once and for all.”
