McCaul Works to Halt Fentanyl

May 25, 2023

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) voted for H.R. 467, the Halt All Lethal Trafficking of (HALT) Fentanyl Act, to help address the fentanyl crisis and ensure law enforcement have the tools necessary to protect Americans from this deadly substance.

“Fentanyl is now the number one killer of young Americans — and stopping it should be our number one priority,” said Rep. McCaul. “Our law enforcement officers work around the clock to fight this epidemic, and the HALT Fentanyl Act will ensure they have the tools they need to keep these deadly drugs off our streets.”

Background:

The HALT Fentanyl Act would permanently schedule all fentanyl-related substances into Schedule 1 of the Controlled Substances Act — the category signaling the highest potential for abuse. This would keep these drugs from ever becoming street-legal, ensure law enforcement retain the authority to seize them at the border, and enable practitioners to research the health effects of fentanyl-related substances.

Rep. McCaul also recently introduced two bills to address the fentanyl crisis:
