McCaul Statement on Release of Ryan Corbett from Afghanistan

January 21, 2025

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) — chairman emeritus of the House Foreign Affairs Committee — released the following statement on reports that two Americans have been freed in a prisoner exchange with the Taliban.

“I’m extremely thankful two Americans, including Ryan Corbett, have been released from Taliban captivity. Ryan is a truly good man who has dedicated his life to helping others, including many in Afghanistan. Yet the Taliban treated him like a criminal, holding him in appallingly inhumane conditions as his health declined. I am praying for a quick recovery so he can return to a full life with his wife Anna, who never stopped fighting for her husband, and their three wonderful children.”

McCaul has consistently called for Corbett’s release and raised his case with the administration. He recently led a House resolution condemning Ryan’s wrongful detainment and demanding his release. He also spoke at a roundtable for Americans detained abroad, at which Anna Corbett represented her husband Ryan.
