McCaul Statement on Marc Fogel's Release from Russia

February 11, 2025

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) — chairman emeritus of the House Foreign Affairs Committee — released the following statement on Marc Fogel's release from Russia.

“I'm thrilled to hear Marc is on his way to be reunited with his family on American soil. I spent years calling on the Biden administration to designate him as 'wrongfully detained' and work to bring him home. His release is long overdue, but I'm thankful President Trump's team — including Special Envoy Witkoff and NSA Waltz — immediately fought for Marc's return. Putin clearly understands President Trump means business. This is what strong American leadership looks like, and I look forward to seeing what more the administration will accomplish as it continues demonstrating peace through strength around the world."

Background:

McCaul has repeatedly called for Marc's release. In early 2023, he wrote to Secretary Blinken, urging the Biden administration to designate Marc's case as wrongful detainment. He also introduced and passed a resolution last Congress, in which he expressed support for Marc and pointed out his politicized, excessive sentence.
