McCaul Stands With Law Enforcement During National Police Week
WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) released the following statement after voting for seven pieces of legislation to honor and support our nation’s law enforcement officers during National Police Week.
“Local law enforcement officers are real-life heroes, running toward danger each day to protect their communities. As a former federal prosecutor, I’ve seen these brave men and women in action enough to know that we can never repay them for their service and sacrifice. That’s why I am proud to back the blue — not just during National Police Week, but every week.”
Rep. McCaul voted ‘yes’ on:
- H.Res.1213, which condemns calls to defund the police and pledges to support law enforcement officers amidst increased violence against them;
- The Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Act, which allows Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain any illegal immigrant who has been charged with or convicted of assaulting a law enforcement officer;
- The Police Our Border Act, which requires the attorney general to report to Congress on how President Biden’s border crisis affects law enforcement;
- H.Res.1210 which condemns the president’s border crisis and the tremendous burdens it has placed on law enforcement officers;
- The DC CRIMES Act of 2024, which limits “youth offender status” to those who are 18 years old or younger to help combat soft-on-crime policies;
- The Improving Law Enforcement Officer Safety and Wellness Through Data Act, which requires adequate data collection to address the rise in anti-police attacks; and
- The Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act (LEOSA) Reform Act, which expands firearm carrying privileges for qualified active and retired law enforcement.
Rep. McCaul also joined Representatives Michael Guest (R-Miss.), Julia Letlow (R-La.), Chris Pappas (D-N.H.), and Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.) in introducing a resolution to honor and recognize the 282 officers who lost their lives in the line of duty in 2023.
“Our law enforcement officers willingly risk their lives for our safety each time they put on their uniforms. Last year, 282 officers — including 11 Texans — died in the line of duty. It’s our responsibility to remember, honor, and respect each of these brave Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice.”
