McCaul on President’s State of the Union Address
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Michael T. McCaul (R-TX), the Republican Leader of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the former Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, released the following statement after President Donald J. Trump’s State of the Union Address:
Congressman McCaul: “Tonight, the American people heard a President urge us all to unite around the common call of patriotism and our shared belief in the American Dream. It was these values that led patriots like my father to serve the call for freedom during World War II, inspired the American imagination to reach for the stars and our collective brilliance to touch the moon.
“I applaud President Trump for calling on Congress to increase funding for critical life-saving treatments in our children battling cancer. As the founder and co-chair of the Childhood Cancer Caucus, I have proudly worked on legislative solutions to end childhood cancer, including the most comprehensive childhood cancer legislation ever passed last year. Investing in our children and their health is the best investment we can make in our future.
“It is clear the time is now to come together and build a better America. That means resolving our politically charged disputes by finding pragmatic policy answers. Especially at our southern border, where we desperately need to end the ongoing humanitarian and security crisis. I have long advocated for a multi-layered defense system that consists of physical infrastructure and better technology—especially at our ports of entry—in conjunction with more boots on the ground and provisions to close legal loopholes in our broken immigration system. Our continued inaction only strengthens the already dangerous threats we face.
“The world is also changing—becoming increasingly more authoritarian, more nationalistic, and less free. As the Republican Leader of the Foreign Affairs Committee, I remain committed to advancing freedom and prosperity not only at home, but throughout the world. We are a safer nation when we work with our allies and partners in the international community to defend our shared values. To this end, I commend the administration for their work to counter China’s illicit trading practices and blatant intellectual property theft, while modernizing NAFTA to better benefit U.S. businesses and protect American workers. In Congress, I will continue strengthening our alliances and partnerships, while holding our adversaries accountable.
“Tonight, those of us entrusted with the responsibility to lead were reminded that our efforts and courage are not enough without purpose and direction. I hope all Americans move forward from tonight with a renewed faith in each other, in our civic commitments, and the greatness of America.”
