McCaul Attends President Trump's Signing of the Laken Riley Act

January 29, 2025

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) — chairman emeritus and current vice chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee — attended President Trump’s signing of the Laken Riley Act, legislation named after the 22-year-old nursing student murdered by an illegal immigrant with a prior criminal record on Feb. 22, 2024. The Laken Riley Act gives the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and state governments more resources to fight crime committed by illegal immigrants.

"I was honored to witness history in the making as President Trump signed the Laken Riley Act into law this afternoon. Laken Riley should still be alive today; her death was a tragedy, and while we can never bring her back, I was proud to help pass this crucial bill to prevent the same thing from happening to anyone else. After four years of the Biden administration’s dangerous open border policies, I am incredibly grateful President Trump prioritized the safety of Texans and all Americans by making the Laken Riley Act the first bill he signed into law."

Background:

The Laken Riley Act requires DHS to detain illegal immigrants who commit theft-related crimes, such as burglary, theft, larceny, or shoplifting. Further, the bill permits states to sue the federal government for injunctive relief if immigration actions such as parole, violation of detention requirements, or other policy failures harm that state or its citizens.

Rep. McCaul was an original cosponsor of the House version of the bill, and he recently voted for the bill on the House floor.
