Where is the Counteroffer?

Jan 25, 2019
Despite all their rhetoric, Democrats have not offered a serious alternative regarding their vision for border security.

Today, I voted on a measure put forward on the House Floor to immediately pay our federal workers. But, for the third time in the last week, House Democrats said "no" to paying our patriotic public servants.

On December 22, 2018, when portions of the government shutdown, I sent a letter to Chief Administrative Officer Phil Kiko instructing him to have my pay withheld for the duration of the shutdown. I will not receive any of my salary until we reopen the government and pay our 800,000 federal workers currently going without pay.

In fact, instead of negotiating a solution, Speaker Pelosi is more interested in undermining the traditions of our great nation and preventing the President from delivering his State of the Union address.

I talked to Brett Hemmer this morning about the latest on the government shutdown and securing our borders. You can watch by clicking below:

This government shutdown has gone on long enough and despite all their rhetoric, Democrats have not offered a serious alternative regarding their vision for border security.

Even before hearing the President's address to the nation this past Saturday, Speaker Pelosi objected to the proposal. The only counter offer that she has put forward is offering one dollar.

We need four things to end the security and humanitarian crisis taking place at our southern border:

  • constructing physical barriers,

  • providing the latest technology,

  • authorizing more boots on the ground,

  • and closing the legal loopholes in our current immigration system.

I will continue to advocate for calmer heads to prevail and work with members on both sides of the aisle to end this crisis and reopen our government.

It is time for us to come together. It is time to end this shutdown.
