Statement by McCaul on the designation of the Haqqani Network as a Foreign Terrorist Organization

September 7, 2012

“I am pleased that this administration has finally headed the many calls in Congress to designate the Haqqani Network as a foreign terrorist organization. Haqqani is responsible for the brutal killing of hundreds of American soldiers in Afghanistan and for terrorizing the Afghan and Pakistani people. This designation should be followed by a thorough assessment of Haqqani's relationship with officials in the Pakistani government, where Haqqani has established safe havens. That is why I introduced H.R. 4110 in February of this year, to restrict assistance to Pakistan unless the Secretary of State certifies to Congress that the Government of Pakistan is not aiding, assisting, advising, or informing the Haqqani network in any capacity.”

Congressman McCaul is Chairman of the Homeland Security Oversight & Investigations Subcommittee and serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
