McCaul, Butterfield introduce bipartisan legislation to support childhood cancer research
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Michael McCaul (TX-10), founder of the Childhood Cancer Caucus joined co-chair Congressman G. K. Butterfield (NC-01) to introduce the Give Kids A Chance Act, a bill to ensure children have access to cutting-edge trials and therapies for cancer.
"The Give Kids a Chance Act will ensure more pediatric therapeutics are explored so kids battling cancer have the best possible treatment to tackle this vicious disease. I am proud to announce this vital piece of legislation with Congressman G .K. Butterfield to further pediatric cancer research and development of life-saving treatments. I will continue to advocate for the childhood cancer community in Congress," said Congressman McCaul.
"No family should ever have to experience the horrific pain of losing a child. Pediatric cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among children, and it is critical that we discover new, innovative treatments and cures," said Congressman Butterfield. "The Give Kids A Chance Act will pave the way for cutting-edge research and child-focused cancer treatments by authorizing the FDA to require pediatric cancer trials study not just one drug, but a combination of drugs so these drugs together can beat relapsed cancers. Studying combination drugs will improve outcomes for children and families in North Carolina and across the country. As the co-chair of the Childhood Cancer Caucus, I will continue to work with my fellow co-chairs and across party lines to push for legislation that gets us closer to defeating this horrible disease."
Background:
- The Give Kids a Chance Act authorizes the FDA to require pediatric cancer trials study not just 1 drug, but a combination of drugs so that these drugs together can beat relapsed cancers.
- Currently, almost all pediatric cancer trials are conducted on kids with relapsed cancer. FDA is only authorized to require pediatric cancer trials of one drug. Unfortunately, children with relapsed cancer are rarely cured by one-drug treatments because their cancers are so advanced.
